This breathtaking sake cup is used one of Makie technique called "Hari-gaki". This technique itself has been handed down since the 1500s in Japan. This is made by sprinkling metal powder on a black lacquered surface and then scratch with a special needle before drying the lacquered surface. The design is drawn freehand and the pen needs to be driven vigorously all at once before drying out the surface because it cannot be redone.
