The Cedar wood used for this item is about 100 years old from one of the three most beautiful forests in Japan, which is located in Akita prefecture, the north wast of Japan. The cedar wood that withstands the harsh and cold climate has fine wood grain as well as excellent durability. Outside of this Wappa sake cup is applied with urethan for easy-care, but the inside is an untreated surface to make the most of the natural fragrance of cedar wood especially when you pour Sake in it. After forming this beautiful shape on a lathe and then by hand, lacquering and wiping off repeatedly many times over, thus developing the natural wood grain coming through from underneath. This breathtaking sake cup is used one of Makie technique called "Hari-gaki". This technique itself has been handed down since the 1500s in Japan. This is made by sprinkling metal powder on a black lacquered surface and then scratch with a special needle before drying the lacquered surface. The design is drawn freehand and the pen needs to be driven vigorously all at once before drying out the surface because it cannot be redone. The contrast between black and silver brings out a modern image. Absolutely one of a kind masterpiece.

"Goto-nuri" is one of the major technique in Kagawa prefecture. The main feature is the mottled pattern created by patting with a finger after applying vermillion Urushi. Because of many layers of Urushi, it is known of developing a rich patina with use and the uneven colour of the pattern accented in vermillion base.
